Speeding a Leading Factor in California, U.S. Crashes

Thursday, September 14, 2017By Richard Alexander

Nearly everyone has sped once or twice on the road. People rush out the door and into their car, going as fast as they think they can get away with to try and not be late. Speeding is a much larger risk than it may seem. Speeding could not only earn you a pretty expensive ticket, it could also increase your chances of being in an accident.

28 percent of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. are speeding related. California’s number jumps up to 32 percent. Speed limits are put in place with the roadway in mind. Going too fast for the road being traveled drastically increases the chances of losing control. In areas with heavy traffic it could also cause an accident since other drivers will be expecting you to travel the speed limit.

There are a lot of factors that could make speeding more fatal. Speeding becomes more dangerous as weather conditions get worse. In dry conditions, only 18 percent of fatal accidents are caused by speeding. In rain that percentage increases to 22 percent. Ice or frosty conditions are the most dangerous as 40 percent of fatal accidents are linked to speeding.

Your age and gender can also affect how likely you are to get into a fatal crash because of speeding. Males are much more likely to get into a fatal crash because of speeding than females, and younger people have more speeding related deaths than older people. The highest percentage of fatal crashes caused by speeding is 36 percent for males ages 15-20.

Being in a hurry should never outweigh the value of a life, and it’s always better to just leave earlier than to try and rush to a destination, especially during harsh weather conditions. Speeding not only endangers your life and the life of your passengers, but it could also endanger the lives of all the drivers around you.
