One Third of Americans Unaware They are Driving with Dangerous Tires

Friday, August 31, 2018By Nina Shapirshteyn

Do you know if your tires are worn and need to be replaced? You may not be aware that your tires pose a significant safety risk and you are not alone. According to industry experts, 35 percent of American drivers do not know how to determine if their tires are bald. This is a major concern for road safety- cars with worn-out tires are three times more likely to be involved in collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is now warning drivers that proper tire maintenance is important to ensure the safety of their vehicles.

The study conducted by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association in 2015 was released again in May, 2018. It found that a large number of drivers lack essential information about tire safety. In addition to not being able to recognize a bald tire, 40 percent of drivers believe that they can tell if a tire is under inflated just by visual inspection and less than 17 percent of drivers reported knowing how to check tire pressure. The NHTSA’s study on tire safety demonstrated that a tire’s tread can have a significant effect on the risk of an accident. The agency reported accident rates of just 2.4 percent when tires had almost full tread. This figure rose to 26 percent when tires had deteriorated to 0-2/32” depth. The NHTSA advised consumers to purchase new tires when tires reach 4/32” tread depth. Collisions were estimated at 8 percent when tires were measured at this depth.

In light of increased travel during the summer months, the NHTSA released a statement reminding drivers that checking tire conditions and inflation is critical for enhancing the longevity of their tires and promoting safe travel. The NHTSA says that drivers should get in the habit of checking the tread and pressure on their tires at least monthly. Checking the tread on your tires is simple- tires have “treadwear indicators” which are raised areas between the tire’s tread. You will know that it is time to purchase new tires when the tread has deteriorated so that it is even with the tread indicator. All you need is a coin and a few minutes to test your tire’s tread and feel assured that you are driving a safe vehicle.
