New Crash Avoidance Technology Helps Keep Drivers Safe

Wednesday, December 27, 2017By Nina Shapirshteyn

Safety is one of the top considerations for many people when shopping for a new car. After considering luxury features and functionality, many drivers review crash test ratings to determine a car’s safety in the event of an accident. But buyers should also consider new technology that prevents accidents from occurring in the first place. This is known as crash avoidance technology and many of the newer 2017 car models feature some or all of these options.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has studied police-reported crashes and analyzed insurance losses and determined that these new crash avoidance technologies do in fact serve to reduce crashes. These features can also be very helpful for teenage or older drivers who may need additional assistance avoiding crashes. Here are a few of the most recent promising crash avoidance technologies:

  • Front Crash Prevention Systems

Front crash prevention systems function similar to back-up cameras and alerts. A front crash prevention system includes a forward collision warning which will sound an alert if the driver gets too close to the car in front.

  • Autobrake Systems

Just like its name, an autobrake system will brake automatically if it senses the car is too close to another object and the driver doesn’t react in time.

  • Curve-Adaptive Headlights

Curve-adaptive headlights move with the car rather than staying in a straight beam like traditional headlights. These new headlights shift direction automatically as a car moves which can help the driver to see better on curves in the dark.

  • High-Beam Assist Technology

Like daytime running headlights, cars equipped with high-beam assist technology help drivers by automatically switching between high beams and low beams based on light conditions while driving.

  • Lane Warnings

Cars equipped with lane warnings feature two different safety options – lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist. Lane departure warning sounds an alarm if the driver travels outside of the lane. Lane-keeping assist steers the car gently back into the lane if it senses that a vehicle is veering off path.

  • Blind-Spot Detection

Blind-spot detection helps drivers to detect cars they may not be able to see. Blind-spot detection can be a small light that illuminates on the side mirror or can be an alert that sounds to advise of the presence of another vehicle.

These new crash avoidance technologies can help you to be safer when driving.
