People who work with brain injury victims often feel a special calling to the field. Sometimes, they know someone who suffered a brain injury. Other times, they want to serve people with special needs. Regardless, many people who work in this area decide to obtain a certification from the Academy of Certified Brain Injury Specialists (ACBIS).

Victims of traumatic brain injury can be impacted in nearly every aspect of their lives. People who work with these patients and their families can be much more effective if they learn about how brain injuries impact people.

The ACBIS offers three levels of certification: Provisional Certified Brain Injury Specialist, Certified Brain Injury Specialist, and Certified Brain Injury Specialist Trainer. These same certifications may be earned regardless of the area the person works in. For example, either a doctor or a nursing assistant may be certified in any of these areas.

People who want to be certified must learn about how brain injuries occur, how they affect victims and their families, and how to help manage changes after brain injuries occur. Here are some of the areas of study:

  • brain injuries and their diagnosis;
  • the consequences of brain injury;
  • how brain injuries affect kids, teens, and the aging population;
  • concussions and consciousness disorders;
  • treatment and rehabilitation for brain injury victims;
  • the effects of brain injuries on families and others close to the victim; and
  • helping brain injury victims become more independent.

After certification is obtained, the person must continue to meet annual training requirements in the field. Trainers have even more ongoing requirements, to ensure their knowledge level is adequate to train others in the field.
