Californians Suffer More Fatal Crashes in Urban Areas, Worse than U.S. Overall

Wednesday, September 13, 2017By Nina Shapirshteyn

In a study presented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) last year, on a rural/urban comparison of traffic safety facts, California reported the highest number of fatalities (1163) in the year 2014, much higher than any other state in the U.S.

The year 2013 saw more than 11,780 motorcycle injuries, and 480 deaths. Figures of car crashes were no less devastating: of an estimated 32,000 deaths resulting annually from car crashes, at least 3000 of these deaths occurred in California. Where everywhere else across the country the count for accidents stands at 54% in rural areas, California seemed to suffer more fatal crashes in urban areas (61%).

Compared nationwide, an increased population in California is one of the major reasons why it reports far more fatalities than other states.

According to the report, there are multiple factors that contribute to these accidents, most of which are avoidable. Consider the following:

  • Night time driving;
  • Speeding;
  • Alcohol/drug use:
  • Improper turning;
  • Riding on the wrong side of the road;
  • Failure to yield;
  • Not obeying traffic signals;
  • Not wearing helmets;
  • Not using seatbelts; and
  • Road rage.

Irrespective of whether it is a car or motorcycle crash, the consequences can be life-threatening. Even when the crash is not fatal, victims may still suffer serious injuries such as fractures, damage of internal organs, blunt trauma to the head, burns, eye and facial injuries, paralysis, and the like.
