As you are loading up your little girl for a trip to the playground your phone pings an alert. You pull it out and check your emails, only to see an alert from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that over 25,000 Graco car seats have been recalled. You glance at your little girl in the rearview mirror. She is safely strapped into her seat—a Graco My Ride 65, which has just been recalled. Now you must decide whether the two of you will be heading off on your adventure as planned, or if you will be going back home.
Graco is recalling over 25,000 of its My Ride 65 convertible car seats that have been sold in Canada and the United States after testing conducted by the NHTSA found that car seat straps did not meet federal standards for breaking strength and could possibly fail in an accident. The NHTSA initially found that the straps could break during a routine test in early 2015. Once NHTSA was able to replicate the testing and had a strap break during a test in April of 2017 Graco was able to identify the batch of straps and issued the recall.
The specific car seat models impacted were all manufactured between May and August of 2014 and have the webbing code “2014/06”. Not all seats have the recalled straps, but the ones that may have the following model numbers:
Graco will begin notifying consumers of the recalled straps and is providing replacement straps to all affected consumers. Graco states that the seats can be used until the replacement straps are received.
The My Ride 65 convertible car seats were designed by Graco to fit children of 4 to 40 lbs. in rear facing mode, but can then be turned to forward facing for children 20 to 65 lbs. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the NHTSA recommend that children ride rear facing until the age of 2 years or until they reach the maximum rear facing height and weight requirements of their seat.
