At least two clinical studies have shown that Viagra (Sildenafil) has the potential to cause sudden blindness and/or loss of vision. Cialis and Levitra have also been associated with blindness and loss of vision.
The possible risk of blindness and/or loss of vision is from "non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy" (NAION). This is a usually rare condition in which blood supply is reduced to the optic nerve causing permanent nerve damage. Although normally rare, research workers at the University of Minnesota believe they have detected a cluster of cases of blindness from this cause in men who have taken Viagra.
FDA ALERT: A small number of men have lost eyesight in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. Public Citizen's Petition to the FDA to require a black box warning for |

A newly published report states that "[a]fter the oral ingestion of sildenafil [Viagra], visual abnormalities have been [constantly] reported ." Furthermore, in a petition filed with the FDA, the respected consumer protection group, Public Citizen pointed out that Viagra accounts for more cases of NAION vision loss than any other drug (19 percent) and more than double the percentage of the next most often-reported drug. Public Citizen obtained these results by analyzing data from the FDA’s Adverse Event Reports database.
Public Citizen also found that the number of case reports of NAION blindness per million prescriptions was 18-fold higher for patients taking Viagra and 25 times higher for Cialis compared to patients taking Lipitor, another drug used by people with similar cardiovascular risk factors.
