Following are news clips and news stories concerning the discovered link between Viagra / Cialis / Levitra and NAION blindness:*
FDA ALERT [07/2005]: A small number of men have lost eyesight in one eye some time after taking Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra. This type of vision loss is called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). NAION causes a sudden loss of eyesight because blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. Nonarteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Developing Soon After Use of Sildenafil (Viagra): A Report of Seven New Cases.
Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology. 25(1):9-13, March 2005. Pomeranz, Howard D. MD, PhD; Bhavsar, Abdhish R. MD
Abstract:
Seven patients, aged between 50 and 69 years, had typical features of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) within 36 hours after ingestion of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) for erectile dysfunction. Six patients had vision loss within 24 hours after use of the agent. Final visual acuity in the affected eye ranged from 20/20 to light perception. Both eyes were affected in one individual. All affected individuals had pre-existing hypertension, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, or hyperlipidemia. Seven similar cases have been previously reported. Sildenafil may provoke NAION in individuals with an arteriosclerotic risk profile.
"FDA Updates Labeling for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra for Rare Post-Marketing Reports of Eye Problems: The Food and Drug Administration approved updated labeling for Cialis, Levitra and Viagra to reflect a small number of post-marketing reports of sudden vision loss, attributed to NAION (non arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy), a condition where blood flow is blocked to the optic nerve. FDA advises patients to stop taking these medicines, and call a doctor or healthcare provider right away if they experience sudden or decreased vision loss in one or both eyes. Further, patients taking or considering taking these products should inform their health care professionals if they have ever had severe loss of vision, which might reflect a prior episode of NAION. Such patients are at an increased risk of developing NAION again." [http://www.agingeye.net/visionbasics/eye&meds.php]
"Jimmy Grant started using Viagra in 1998, when he was 57. At first, he
felt pressure in his temples and saw color changes in his vision. 'I noticed the symptoms probably within 45 minutes to an hour,' he told CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson. Soon, he went blind in his right eye. [http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/05/26/eveningnews/main698124.shtml]
"Late last month, however, after the possible link was reported in the
Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, FDA spokeswoman Susan Cruzan said, 'We take this seriously, and the FDA is working with the sponsors to make sure the public is aware of this so they can take it into consideration.' The journal study examined seven cases where men suffered an unusual form of sudden blindness within 36 hours of taking Viagra." "Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) has been
reported rarely post-marketing in temporal association with the use of
PDE5 inhibitors, including Viagra. It is not possible to determine if
these events are related to PDE5 inhibitors or to other factors. Physicians should advise patients to stop use of PDE5 inhibitors,
including Viagra, and seek medical attention in the event of sudden
loss of vision." [http://www.viagramd.com/hcpConfirm.asp]
"The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports that the impotence drug Viagra -- and others like it -- can cause a rare kind of sudden blindness. The agency has received at least 43 reports of sudden, irreversible vision loss among users of the drugs, most of them taking Viagra. Agency officials said yesterday that they are in talks with Pfizer Inc., the maker of Viagra, about adding the new information to its product label." While sildenafil (Viagra—Pfizer) is well known to produce blurred vision and changes in blue-green color vision, FDA is working with the company to analyze 38 reports of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in men taking that drug. In some cases, the onset of blindness reportedly followed soon after administration of sildenafil.
