"To protect the safety of the public, we write to recommend that clinicians stop prescribing valdecoxib (Bextra), except in extraordinary circumstances," -- quoted from an editorial in the December 23, 2004 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Introduction: [^]
Published studies now appear to indicate a link between Bextra and Bextra side effects, including serious heart and skin problems.
For example, on November 10th, a report in The New York Times quoted University of Pennsylvania cardiologist Dr. Garrett FitzGerald as stating that people taking Bextra have more than twice the risk of heart attacks and strokes compared with people who took placebos. He based his comments on pooling data from 5,930 patients participating in 12 clinical trials. FitzGerald says Bextra "is a time bomb waiting to go off."
According to a report published on December 22, 2004 by the
European Medicines Agency (EMEA), two clinical studies were recently conducted to evaluate the safety of valdecoxib (Bextra) and parecoxib sodium (a similar drug), in patients following CABG
(heart) surgery.
Both CABG studies showed a higher rate of serious cardiovascular thromboembolic events (e.g. heart attack, stroke) in the parecoxib sodium/valdecoxib treatment arm compared to the group of patients receiving placebo. This was not observed in a general surgery setting.
Furthermore,
the EMEA has received new post-marketing reports of serious skin reactions, some with fatal outcomes, including erythema
multiforme, exfoliative dermatitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis in patients receiving valdecoxib (Bextra).
The reported rate of these reactions and Bextra side effects appears to be greater for valdecoxib as compared with other COX-2 selective inhibitors.
See EMEA Statement On Valdecoxib (Bextra/Valdyn) & Parecoxib Sodium (Dynastat/Rayzon) for details.
